Kim West különleges alkotásait már jól ismerik Los Angeles lakói, hiszen a lány rendkívüli utcaművészete az egész város falait ellepte. Most nem a klasszikus, árnyékolt feliratos graffitikre kell gondolnunk: West színes, impresszionizmusra hajazó festményeket készít, és azt is elárulta, hogy ezek otthoni kísérletezésekből születtek.

A legnehezebb az volt, hogy leküzdje a magasságtól való félelmét - hiszen gyakran akár 15-6 méter magasban készíti el a mintákat - , és a falakra ugyanazon technikákkal viszi fel a festéket, ahogy otthon a műtermében. Csupán annyi a különbség, hogy a vásznat most a fal váltja fel.

His painting's title is borrowed from a poem of the same name, by the Austrian poet Ingeborg Bachmann. Among other themes, both the painting and the poem share a desire to return to a more perfect place in time #8212; a magical utopia #8212; all the while recognizing that such a return is physically impossible. Bohemia, after all, was a landlocked kingdom that could never literally lie by the sea. In Kiefer#8217;s painting, the poppies are said to be symbols of dreams, sleep, and death, and they are also the flower for remembrance of military veterans. When I began planning this mural, the title of Kiefer#8217;s painting and the theme of Bachmann#8217;s poem kept creeping into my notes. I also knew I wanted this mural to have the feeling of a sort of daydream, the kind you might have on a road trip as a passenger: your eyes are shut but the sun is seeping through. There is a vivid contrast between the darkness of closed eyes and the technicolor, over-real images that float with varying degrees of focus and blur. Regardless of will or want, there are perfect moments in time to which I know I can not return.
